Previous Floods the Oconto River has Faced
In May of 2022, the Oconto river experienced massive influxes of water due to a major storm event. As a result, many of the local residents were subjected to major flood damages to their homes and private property. Along with extensive damages to residential areas, many of the local roads were washed out or experienced elevated flooding conditions. Due to the extensive flooding conditions, around 12 roads had to be closed while another 10 of them had standing or flowing water on the road surface.

Motivation
Our motivation to mitigate flood damages along the Oconto River is driven by a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of local communities, sustaining local economies, preserving the ecological integrity of the river, and fostering long-term climate resilience. As the world continues to evolve the threat of climate change is ever growing. With climate change comes an increase in the intensity of storms, and many existing rivers are not prepared for this change. An example of this is shown above with the Oconto river, and that is why we felt it is important to analyze the current flow conditions and recommend future channel modifications to mitigate future flood damages.
